From the High Window

From my window high, the rythmic clicking of ice droplets

Like rice falling on wood floor, clicking and hissing as it piles

Forming a coat of white glaze over every surface

Piling relentlessly, covering all it strikes with linen-like sheer

What was grey, now crystal white, what drab, now bright

All healing over from the grey and from the brown

Soothed, comforted, and clothed in regal white hue

Covering in purity and presented with all to He who is

Dreading the cold I look outward, but I’m warmed,

Not by the heat inside but by what I clearly see

From the eyes of a child looking up at my window

Smiling in the fun of the moment, sliding in oversized boots

A scream of glee pierces the window from outside

A childlike laugh of unencumbered joy

Another slides on cardboard down the small drive

Spreading the simple joy of life below my window

How long has it been that I have waited

Waited for the joy to return as I wanted it to be

Waited for the pain to stop and the world to come to me

From my chair the world awaits me

Dare I venture out from the inside to the out

Dare I taste life myself again even for just a while

Dare I go outside my window to the world

And resume my quest for a simple smile

Lord give me the unbridled joy of childhood

Give me the gift of laughter to light up my life

Make me like the child in winter snowfall

Embraced by it and embracing it all

Help me to move beyond my window

From the locked inside to the open world

To sample and live out life in full glow

To embrace simple joy and let it cover all

With a coating of love like fresh fallen snow
