Closer To You

From my beginnings here, a longing

An apart-ness I try to reconcile

A separation I look to heal

An awareness of incompletion real

Striving through a life of being away

An eternal spark deep down remains

For return from where I came this way

To be with You and to forever stay

While here, counting success and failure

 Feeling both joy and sadness

Reaching for You in the act of living

And knowing You are always giving

Life in progress always bringing me closer

Either in time or in grace attained

In time inevitable, but in love here and true

I come closer each day to You

Yet You are here and real and now

In Your incredible gift  

Of earthly gifts made perfect for the living

For me as Your child freely with love given

Gift left not behind, for and with me

That I might join with You

In an intimate and perfect communion

My life in You, and Yours in me

Closer to You I can not get

But to see Your face again

Than to join You in full communion

Here in Your creation

 Fulfillment of longings all

Completion of unfinished all

Feeling of all apart-ness end

You, in total presence here

Until You bring me home again
