I Wait

As smoky gray clouds darken overhead

I wrap my face against the wind

Warm breath steaming through my scarf

The time of winter wait begins

A time of looking forward to snow

But knowing that it will not last

A time of waiting for holiday’s arrival

As advent weeks come and pass.

I wait for the birthday of Jesus

Happened over two thousand years ago

And warm my hands over crackling embers

As thoughts of my life ebb and flow

I await a new beginning

Of rebirth, the start of something new

A time of newness and promise

Can I also start my life anew?

He came so humble and frail

The Lord of creation, a child so small

Can I give up all my longings

And in humility restart it all?

Another chance awaits this year

As Advent paves the way

Let me rid myself of burdens

And start fresh, as a child today.
