We all are somewhat uncomfortable with emptiness, with darkness, with
silence
And look unceasingly for ways to fill the void, to
light the dark, for assurance of presence
With powerful microscopes we look for the smallest
objects,
With powerful magnets we try to open the smallest
particles to find how theyÕre made
Ever searching, ever wondering, ever unsatisfied with
the latest finding
Even trying to define what we can not understand even
as Òanti-matterÓ and Òexotic matterÓ
In an unceasing search for the how and what and why
With telescopes we search the most distant heavens for
objects as old as we can find
We try to traverse immense distances of space and time
with our frail human tools
And wonder if light and time and space themselves are
for us to define, to manipulate
With sensors and radiography we test and listen for
messages from the heavens
Ever searching, ever wondering, ever unsatisfied with
the latest finding
Even trying to define the void and the emptiness as
Òdark matterÓ to satisfy that need for completeness, and
Name unknown things as Òworm holesÓ and Òblack holesÓ
to satisfy our need to understand the incomprehensible
With numbers and formulas we try to find the reasoning
for all that was, is and will be
With computers of human construction we seek to expand
our minds
Beyond what even we ourselves can comprehend in this
quest
Calculating new ways to answer the old, the timeless,
To define what is, in terms of measurement and
calculation
An discover the incredible symmetry of creation far beyond
our power to calculate
With chemical elements and tools fashioned by our
hands we even manipulate life itself
Searching for ways to duplicate the miracle of
creation, to be creators
To improve on creation, to try to control it
In wonderful ways using the elements of our
understanding to repair ourselves
But in perversion of our selfness even try to
determine lifeÕs beginning and end
In trying to satisfy our innate need for completeness,
we:
Refuse to admit that there exists the incalculable
Refuse to admit that there exists the undefinable
Refuse that there exists the timeless
Refuse to admit that there exists the unmeasurable
The inconceivable
We are uneasy here, and so very on our own if we do
not embrace the One who created all. Who is present in all.
For in Him all is defined, all is real, all
is...because it is His will that all in fact... is
The hunger for knowledge is a most precious gift given
to the created
A gift given to us freely by God to help us grow
closer to Him
To give us a small taste of the eternal
To help us learn to love what He has created for us
here
And help us desire the eternity with Him that awaits
May our desire to fill the emptiness, light the
darkness and endure the excruciating silence
Be satisfied by the knowledge that our loving God and
Creator
Fills all, lights all, speaks to us, and created us
for this world to prepare us for His Home
